Time for a progress report on the writing of Exiles from the Sacred Land: Book Two of the Sacred Land Saga. First, I want to say that Defenders of the Sacred Land is doing very well in both the sales department and the reviews department. I have already been contacted, and told to get finished with book two, by new fans. Let me tell you all this: I had Exiles completely mapped out and outlined years ago. When Defenders was published, only three short weeks ago, I already had over a quarter of Exiles written. It is just a matter of finishing the writing of it, running it through the editor, and formatting, before it is ready to go. I am now currently about a third into writing it. Believe me, I am just as anxious to get it out there as most of you are to read it! I have decided that I am going to put in a few extras. First, I will, of course, expand the glossary. Second, I am including the sort story "Dragon Knight" in the appendix. This is the story of the first Dragon Knight and why dragons have knights working with them. I think I will include an appendix in each subsequent book in the series as well with a back story or tidbit from my world. Anyhow, I am working on getting book two written. In the meantime, keep telling your friends abou
Today, I wanted to thank all of the people who have purchased Defenders of the Sacred Land. I figured a few friends and family would buy it or download it free in the free promotion stage and then I would just work on book two and build a fan base over time. That was my original plan. Since Defenders is the first book of a series, I expected that it would be a "lead off" novel to build anticipation for the rest of the series. I already had book two mapped out and several chapters in the bag when I decided to go ahead and release Defenders. Thank goodness that I was so far along on book two because Defenders has far exceeded my expectations! It has been available for less than three weeks and has managed to stay on the Amazon top 100 best sellers list for Fantasy: sword and sorcery for the past several days! It is currently hovering around number 63! Sales have been steadily increasing and the reviews are awesome. I really did work hard to make this series a "traditional" fantasy series with a fresh perspective. I have played around with the "farm boy becomes a great 'insert title here' and saves the world despite astronomical odds" plot. I am toying with the "kill all the really powerful magic users because if they are so powerful then why do they need the farm boy" plot hole. I hint at these but I do not follow them. My protagonist is not the dumb farm-boy and my magic users are still there and still really powerful. I let the story breathe and progress. No whiny farm boy etc. I am also a fan of romance and I realize that a lot of my fan base is teen girls and young women so there is a bit of romance but not so much that my boys and men fan base feel like puking!
Anyway, I could talk about my series all day, this is a thank you blog! I wanted to acknowledge that I am a anglophile and I love the UK. I can't wait to see what Peter Capaldi brings to the Doctor Who series. I watch a lot of BBC shows and I am a fan of The Voice and I watch both the US and the UK versions. So, I am so happy that the UK is buying and sharing my book as well as the US. I even have UK followers on my twitter account. Thanks UK!
Anyway, once again, thank you for allowing me to tell my story. I am a fan of my series as well as its creator. I know that seems odd but its true. I am one of those writers that can enjoy going back and reading my own work. That said, it's time to get back to writing book two. I have already had quite a few fans crack the whip on me to get it finished. It's coming along on time so don't worry!
I am writing book two of the Sacred Land Saga like my butt is on fire. It's coming along very well. It's on track and on time. I might even finish it early. Just wanted to update you.
Defenders of the Sacred Land just broke the top 100 paid kindle best seller list in the category of fantasy - sword and sorcery! It is currently #98! Just above me on the list is Terry Goodkind, Terry Brooks, and George RR Martin! I am so excited to be in the top 100 in my genre!
It has been an eventful few days! Some of you may know me pretty well, and you may know that I have been writing all of my life. However, if you know me that well then you know that I have largely just written without much thought on how to publish my work or even really trying to get anything published. I have always looked upon my writing as a hobby. Well, once I did get serious, and in my true nature, I took control of all aspects of my intellectual property from fonts to book covers. I have my hand in about every process of the creation of my work from start to finish. (If I could draw, paint, or ink colors, I would probably do that too!) The downside is that it is a pretty time consuming venture that ultimately takes my attention away from writing.
The other time killer is my own mind. I am writing and out of nowhere AMCs The Walking Dead creep into my thoughts and I wonder if those poor guys are ever going to get a break. Then, as I am thinking of zombies I realize: Hey! There are walking dead in my fantasy series muhahaha! Alas, even though MY zombies are slated to show up again in my series, they are NOT like the zombies in The Walking Dead. It would be silly to have my characters running from and being killed by zombies out of the context of the way I wrote them in Defenders of the Sacred Land. BOO! Oh well, I can always write a zombie story later!
Back to the eventful past few days: I recently began experimenting with my author website and I hope (if you are not reading this blog on my website) that all of you have visited my webpages. I have been tweaking it here and there. The address right now is marktyson.weebly.com. I say right now because I am changing all of my intellectual property over to Mark E. Tyson. Soon the same exact website will be marketyson.com. It's already like that on twitter and FB. I will be putting my name as Mark E. Tyson on my books from now on too. WHY? Because there are an alarming amount of Mark Tysons out there. I am hoping the E will set me apart from the others, especially when I am googled. Now that I have gotten my website, twitter account, FB account etc. worked out. I can get back to writing! Exiles of the Sacred Land is nearing completion of the writing stage. I will edit and polish it, send it off to my editor, finalize the cover etc. and have it ready to go shortly.
Hand in there--
MT (soon to be MET)
The Wielder Cycle is a series of 3 books that are currently only partially written. The covers are beautifully done by Joseph Calkins. He still owes me the final cover! They tell the story of Sheyna Namear (Lady Shey in the Sacred Land Saga) from when she was a small girl up until the War of the Oracle. It is a prequel series to the Sacred Land Saga. The first book, titled Wielder: Apprentice, was originally a novella written as a back story. I have now re-written it as a full novel. It will currently have little resemblance to the original. It will feature the same cover but will have a different ISBN and will be billed as the 2nd edition. The little novella will not correctly connect to the rest of the Wielder Cycle Series books. I have tried to have it removed from sale on all levels so it can be replaced with the far superior version, but I have been unsuccessful in having all copies removed. If you see Wielder: Apprentice for sale with fewer than 100 pages it is the novella and not the novel. Do not buy this copy if you plan to buy the rest of the series. I will not be working on the Wielder Cycle until I am finished with the Sacred Land Saga. To be honest, I probably will not release the novel version of Wielder: Apprentice until after the next, unrelated series I have in the works, just to give me a break from the Sacred Land mythos.
I wanted to let anyone interested know that Defenders of the Sacred Land will be available for free on kindle beginning March 19 through March 21. Now is your chance to get it downloaded! Oh, and tell your friends! Plus, I would really appreciate it if you do download and read the book that you post a good review on Amazon. Good Reviews will equal more downloads and I want to get this book to as many people as I can during the promotion. Thanks in advance!
